History

Nestled in the heart of Glenridding, Cumbria, our charming self-catering cottage boasts not only a picturesque setting but a rich tapestry of history that adds to its allure. Originally a traditional Lakeland miner’s terrace cottage, it has been a silent witness to the lives and labors of the local community, particularly the miners of the Glenridding lead mine.

The cottage’s story began in the mid-20th century, rooted in the mining era of the 1950s and 60s. It was during these years that the father of the current owners worked tirelessly in the lead mines until its closure in 1964. Seizing the opportunity, he purchased the cottage, marking the beginning of its journey from a miner’s dwelling to a cherished family heirloom.

As the years unfolded, the cottage saw various transformations, initially serving as a home to a young couple from the village, then transitioning into the beloved self-catering accommodation it is today. This evolution was driven by the family’s dedication, particularly during their retirement, to provide a welcoming and meticulously maintained retreat for visitors.

Now managed personally by the owners, Ken and Jack, the cottage stands as a testament to their family’s history and commitment to preserving the essence of Lakeland’s heritage. They invite guests to immerse themselves in the tranquility and beauty of the surroundings, enriched by the cottage’s storied past and the enduring legacy of the local mining community. This intimate connection to its history, combined with the breathtaking natural landscape of Glenridding, makes our cottage not just a place to stay but an experience to cherish.
